THE INTERNET OF THINGS
The Internet of Things is transforming businesses all over the world. Are you interested in discovering what the Internet of Things could do for you?Well, look no further! We hope to build this part of our site into an Internet of Things portal which will be a destination for all things IoT. In the meantime, here are some answers to the questions we hear most often.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?
When most of us consider accessing the internet, what springs to mind are our laptops, tablets and smartphones – the devices that we use daily for communication, information and entertainment. What makes our devices ‘smart’ is their ability to connect to the internet. The ‘Internet of Things’ is best described as the practise of linking objects to the internet that do not normally have internet connectivity – making them ‘smart’. By connecting these ‘things’ to the internet we are able to communicate with them remotely via smartphones, computers and other IoT-enabled devices.
Why do we want to connect ‘things’ to the Internet?
The Internet of Things is revolutionising our world both at home and in the workplace. Smart home technology, a popular IoT application, enables users to remotely control and automate their heating; control lighting at the tap of an app, and secure their homes automatically as they leave the building. Although on the surface these features may appear to be unnecessary or gimmicky, these innovations are in fact reducing the cost of household bills, helping the elderly to live independently, and ultimately giving people greater control over the management of their homes. Business owners can similarly benefit from these technological advances, enabling greater security, better monitoring and a more economical use of resources that can provide the boost that a traditional business needs in an ever-advancing market.
How much should I invest?
As with most things, how much you decide to invest will depend greatly upon what your needs are and the budget you have available.
Off-the-shelf or bespoke
If you are looking to implement IoT in just a handful of instances and the requirements are fairly straightforward, the most cost-effective option may be to use an off-the-shelf solution. There are a wide range of consumer focused systems which enable a basic interface to connect with a wide range of popular, everyday items. If however your requirements are more complex, or you want to build the technology into a large number of devices, it is often better to develop something bespoke.
Developing a prototype
Before you dive head-first into the unknown, it is advisable to first test the water by developing a prototype. The prototype doesn’t need to have all the functionality of the final version, nor does it need to perform to the same level. The main requirement of a good prototype is to provide sufficient information to prove the concept.
